A Tragic Discovery That Left a Community Heartbroken
The discovery of Rebecca Hughes, 32, and three young children—Evelyn Newell, 8, Allison Newell, 6, and Amelia Newell, 5—has left the small community of Wolcottville, Indiana, facing an unimaginable tragedy.
According to Indiana State Police, officers from the Wolcottville Police Department were sent to a residence in the 100 block of South Main Street around 11:20 a.m. on September 17, 2024, after a welfare check was requested. When officers arrived, they discovered the bodies of an adult woman and three children inside the residence. Indiana State Police were then contacted to assist with the investigation.
Authorities emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public, but many questions remained unanswered. At the time of the statement, officials had not determined the exact cause or circumstances of the deaths.
The tragedy has also left the children’s father, Jonathan Newell, facing the painful task of arranging funerals for the three young sisters. A GoFundMe fundraiser was reportedly established to help with funeral expenses and provide support during an incredibly difficult period.
As investigators worked to establish what happened, family, friends, and members of the community were left mourning four lives lost far too soon. The investigation was expected to provide more answers as authorities continued gathering information.
