A US Army major returned home three weeks early from deployment expecting a reunion with her young daughter — instead, she found the four-year-old home alone and uncared for, while her husband was away on a cruise with his family.
When she called her husband, he urgently warned her not to let anyone open the padlocked hallway closet. Police opened it anyway, and inside they found boxes of unopened letters and parcels she had sent her daughter during deployment, along with evidence of forged documents and loans taken out in her name.
Investigators also found a notebook setting out a months-long plan to turn the child against her, and an unfiled custody petition designed to portray her as an absent mother. When the ship docked, her husband and his mother were arrested.
He later pleaded guilty to charges including child neglect, forgery and identity theft, while his mother was convicted at trial. The major left active duty, joined the Reserves, and rebuilt her life with her daughter, turning the once-padlocked closet into an open reading nook.
