He became a father at 17, when his high-school girlfriend became pregnant. They had planned to raise their daughter together, but after graduation she decided she wanted a different life, left for college, and never contacted them again.
From then on he raised his daughter entirely on his own. The years were difficult — long hours and many sacrifices — but she grew into a smart, kind and hardworking young woman who made him proud.
On the night of her graduation she went out celebrating with friends and came home late. The next morning two police officers knocked on his door, and one asked if he had any idea what his daughter had been hiding from him. His heart sank.
Instead of bad news, the officer handed him a folder of photographs: his daughter volunteering at food drives, helping elderly residents, visiting hospitals and organising community service projects. For years she had quietly built a volunteer network that helped hundreds of people, had received a major community service award the night before, and had kept it secret to surprise her father — along with a letter thanking him for every sacrifice he had made, and saying everything good she had accomplished was because of the example he set.
