Tom, my husband, had been nagging me to get a second job because he thought it would be easy for me since I work from home. But I got the feeling that he was persistent for a different reason.
A chat with my mom made me interested. Was Tom’s company having trouble? I knew he was hiring new people because he always had clients. It didn’t make sense.
Tom’s idea that I should sell my car and buy a new one was the last blow. What did he think? I had to get a second job to pay for our way of life. I was shocked. Why did he try so hard to get this done?
I chose to do things on my own because I was determined to find the truth. I put in for a job at the nearby bowling hall where Tom and his friends liked to hang out. I wanted him to be envious and feel bad about what he said.
I put on the necessary tight, short dress for my first night shift and watched as Tom’s face turned dark with pain. As the guys started to hit on me, Tom became more uncomfortable.
But the real bombshell came when Ursula, the manager, told them a shocking truth: Tom was known for seducing waitresses, and one of them had even given birth to his kid. It was like a ton of bricks when I heard the truth.
When I talked to Tom about it, my heart broke. Then why did he want me to get a second job? So that he can pay his child support.
I told Tom to pack his bags and leave as tears ran down my face. I would file for divorce the next day. The bowling alley had changed from a place of payback to a place of freedom.
It hit me as I walked away that the truth can hurt. But it’s better to deal with things straight on.
