BE GENTLE WITH YOUR MOTHER ❤️
There are times when a quick, careless answer jumps out of your mouth, sharp enough to hurt the person who loves you most. You see the sadness in her eyes, but you look away because facing the pain you’ve caused feels uncomfortable.
Sometimes, you become impatient with her questions. You wonder why she worries so much, why she repeats herself, or why she wants to know where you’re going and when you’ll return. You may feel that she doesn’t understand your life, your struggles, or the world you’re trying to navigate.
But one day, you may begin to understand hers.
You may realize that behind her quiet smile are years of sacrifices you never witnessed. There were nights she cried without telling anyone, worries she carried alone, and dreams she quietly put aside so you could have the opportunities she never had.
She may have been exhausted while preparing your meals, worried while waiting for you to come home, and frightened when life placed difficulties in your path. Yet she still found a way to ask whether you had eaten, whether you were warm enough, and whether everything was okay.
That is the extraordinary thing about a mother’s love. Even when her own heart is hurting, she often finds room to comfort yours.
She doesn’t always express her feelings perfectly. Sometimes she becomes overprotective. Sometimes she asks too many questions. Sometimes she says things that frustrate you.
She is human, too.
She has weaknesses, fears, disappointments, and moments when she doesn’t know what to do. She is learning as she goes, just as you are. She may not always get everything right, but her imperfections do not erase the love she has given you.
Remember that she was once young, too. She had hopes, ambitions, friendships, and dreams of her own. Before she became your mother, she was a woman discovering life, making mistakes, and trying to find her place in the world.
Then you came along, and her world changed.
She learned to recognize your cries, stayed awake when you were sick, celebrated your smallest achievements, and worried about dangers you never even noticed. She watched you grow from a helpless little child into someone capable of walking away from her without realizing how quickly the years had passed.
And even now, when you think you no longer need her, a part of her may still see the little child who once reached for her hand.
So, when she calls you, try not to answer with irritation.
When she tells you the same story again, remember that one day you might wish you could hear it one more time.
When she asks whether you’ve eaten, don’t dismiss her concern as unnecessary. Sometimes, those simple questions are the only ways she knows how to express the love she still carries for you.
If she makes a mistake, correct her gently.
If she forgets something, be patient.
If she needs your help, don’t make her feel like a burden.
And if you’ve hurt her with your words, find the courage to apologize. You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to tell her that you’re sorry, that you appreciate her, or that you love her.
Because one day, life will change in ways you cannot imagine today.
There may come a morning when your phone no longer rings with her familiar voice. You may enter a room and instinctively expect to see her sitting in her favorite chair, only to remember that she is no longer there.
You may prepare to tell her something wonderful that happened in your life, then realize that the person you most want to share it with is gone.
And suddenly, the ordinary moments you once took for granted will become the memories you treasure most.
You will miss her questions.
You will miss her advice, even the advice you once ignored.
You may even miss the little things that used to annoy you, because they were part of the familiar rhythm of having her in your life.
You will wish for one more conversation, one more embrace, one more opportunity to sit beside her and tell her everything you were too busy to say.
But time does not allow us to return to yesterday.
So, if your mother is still here, do not wait for a hospital room, a birthday, or a moment of regret to remind you of her worth.
Visit her when you can. Call her just to hear her voice. Sit beside her without looking at your phone. Ask her about her childhood, her dreams, and the stories she has carried for years.
Let her know that her life matters beyond everything she has done for you.
And remember, being gentle with your mother does not mean accepting every action or agreeing with everything she says. Healthy boundaries are sometimes necessary. But even when you disagree, you can speak with respect, protect your peace without cruelty, and remember the humanity of the person standing before you.
Love her while you can. Forgive where you can. Say the words that need to be said today.
Because the day may come when all you have left are photographs, familiar memories, and the echo of a voice you would give anything to hear again.
And when that day comes, may your heart find comfort in knowing that you didn’t save all your tenderness for a tomorrow that never arrived.
Be gentle with your mother.
Not because she is perfect, but because she is precious.
Not because she will live forever, but because neither of you will.
And not because you owe her a lifetime of repayment, but because love deserves to be expressed while the people we love are still here to feel it.
Give her a hug today. Call her today. Tell her you love her today.
Sometimes, the smallest gestures become the memories that stay with us forever.
❤️ A mother may not ask for much, but never underestimate how much a little kindness from her child can mean.
